Slice of Life #8
Mud Monster
March 9, 2009
“Natalie!” cried someone.
Natalie- my riding instructor, turned around to see what was wrong.
Everyone had stopped their horses and stared at only one thing (you are supposed to stop your horse and stand still when something has gone wrong or a horse is spooked).
All of my friends had stopped their horses, people like: Luisa, Victoria, Mau (pronounced Maw-oooow), and Skyler were all still.
A person I didn’t recognize pointed at something way off in the distance.
I scanned the arena; I was frantic to find the problem.
Natalie ran towards, what I thought looked like, Chloe.
There stood Chloe- still as stone.
Where is Natalie’s horse Chloe was supposed to be riding? What could she be staring at? Why is Natalie running towards her? What are people laughing and staring at? I wondered, frustrated, because I couldn’t find the problem.
Juancho- the dark-brown horse, lay there, next to a terrified Chloe; He was now rolling around in the mud.
Oh no! I thought. There could only be one thing wrong…colic. I told myself.
Colic is horrible; They can even kill a horse. I knew that, and that’s what I now feared.
As Natalie ran towards Juancho, he began to get up. His fluffy coat was now a lighter, dustier looking brown.
Now, more relieved, I realized that it wasn’t colic. It was just that the silly horse wanted to have some fun, maybe scratch his back (it was probably itchy).
Now laughing, I kicked my horse to make it move, as everyone else started to move again too.
