Piña and Papaya

Slice of Life #11
Piña and Papaya March 12, 2009

“Hurry up and pick one!” Mom said frustrated.

I just couldn’t find the right parakeet, even though there where swarms of them. I knew I had to pick one soon, or else mom would pick it herself.

“Mmmmmmm… that one!” I said pointing at a parakeet with a blue body and a light-yellow head – a strange mix. It looked to me as if someone had splashed paint onto it. My face was gently pressed against the, smooth, white bars of the parakeet’s cage; therefore, I could see her through the swarm of other birds.

All the different colored parakeets flew around franticly .They almost looked like a giant rainbow while they tried to avoid the man’s net. The man swung his net this way and that way, trying to catch my late birthday present, the whole time trying to avoid other parakeets in the way.

When Papaya (that is the name I picked for the bright-yellow girl parakeet) was finally trapped in the small, green fish net, the man grabbed her- he carefully wrapped his fingers around her small wings. I grabbed the other “Melo” box, and handed it to the man. He shoved Papaya in the small box, closing the top tightly.

I grabbed another box- the one with the other girl parakeet: Piña. Piña chirped angrily as I carried them both out of the shop.

On the ride home, I thought about the other two boy parakeets at home; how they would react to two new girl parakeets in their cage and who I would give the future baby parakeets to.
